    What Is Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness. Learn more about this condition here!

Myasthenia gravitatis (MG) is a neurological disorder characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue. It affects both adults and children. The cause of MG is unknown, although there are several theories.

    Symptoms

There are two main symptoms of MG: muscle weakness and fatigability. Muscle weakness occurs when muscles become weak because of lack of use. Fatigability refers to how quickly a person becomes tired after exercising. In some cases, people with MG also have difficulty swallowing. This is called dysphagia.

    Causes

MG is caused by antibodies that attack the nerves that control muscles. It usually affects the eyes, throat, and breathing muscles. People who have MG often need to take medication to prevent muscle weakness. They may also need surgery to remove part of the thymus gland, which produces the antibodies.

    Diagnosis

If you think you might have MG, talk with your doctor right away. He or she will perform tests to determine whether you have MG. You may need to see a neurologist (a specialist in brain and nervous system disorders) for diagnosis. Once diagnosed, treatment options vary based on symptoms. There is no cure for MG, but there are treatments that help manage symptoms.

    Treatment

In some cases, people who have MG can take medication to control symptoms. This includes medications called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs). These drugs work by increasing the activity of ACh receptors in the body. They also slow down the breakdown of neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine, which helps muscles relax.

    Prevention

If you think you might have MG, talk with your doctor right away. He or she will perform tests to determine whether you do have MG. Then, your doctor will decide what treatment plan is best for you. You may need to take medication every day, or only when needed. It depends on how severe your symptoms are.
